Puppy Love: Pet-Friendly Engagement Photos

Jordan shares her top tips for pre-wedding pics as well as some adorable canine inspiration!

Sometimes a little bribery is a good thing. Or at least, it is when it comes to snapping portraits with pets! Which is exactly how photog Thisbe Grace worked her magic for a shoot with one of Jordan Payne’s couples, Sarah and Josh, and their two sweet pups. A lot of TLC went down during the process, along with the help of assistants and whistle calls to get the doggies facing the camera. Portraits with pets are a great way to up the “fun factor” during engagement sessions, and create picture-perfect memories with those furry four-legged family members.

Thisbe snapped the couple’s pooch-accessorized pics—how cute are their monogrammed dog collars?!—at Dallas’ Flippen Park, which made for a nature-filled backdrop that was also ideal for the canine additions. Amazing natural light and beautiful scenery is one of Jordan’s top tips for taking engagement portraits. She also suggests choosing two to three outfits that coordinate with each other to provide a little variety. But most important? “Have fun!” says Jordan. “Sip a drink beforehand to loosen up if you aren’t crazy about having your pics taken.”

Engagement photos are about more than just preparing for the Big Day. They set the tone for the entire event! Just as their bright, airy and polished photo style suggests, Sarah and Josh had a classic and elegant wedding—with two adorable “puppy bearers.” Jordan always has creative ways to implement engagement portraits for more than just a standard display at the nuptials. “I’ve helped couples showcase them as life-sized cut outs at the cocktail hour or reception as well as for thank you cards and family gifts,” she says. “Of course, hanging them in your first home together is special, too. It’s memories made forever with man’s best friend!”
